Multiple targets, and multiple party members.
While exploring the world of View From Below, the player can run into 1-3 enemies at once. At the start of the game, you only have one party member on your team to face them- the main character Comet. However, later on in the story you gain two additional party members, though I'm not ready to talk about them just yet....
The Usual Suspects: Status Conditions and Items
A lot of the usual elements you find in turn based RPGs are all here; items, status conditions, critical hits, misses, running away from battles, etc. A big, unique thing the game does though is:
Unlike most RPGs, you don't actually learn attacks by leveling up. Instead, you have to "ABSORB" them from enemies. In the game, the player can attempt to absorb, and then use, the last attack used. The lower an enemy's HP is, the more likely the player will be to successfully absorb their attack. If successful, the player can then equip it both in, and outside of, battle. If you were to, say, want the attack of the middle enemy, you could either try freezing or paralyzing the right-most enemy, or simply defeating them first. This mechanic leads to some really cool solutions, and gives greater variety to how they might approach different challenges.
Using and Recovering Mana
Mana is used up when the player uses any attack that isn't "normal" type. The stronger the attack, the more mana it'll use. Players can then regain mana by using either a mana potion item, or by successfully blocking an enemy's attack.
There's many more smaller details to the battle system, though I'd rather players experience them for themselves. While the core of the system is very simple and easy to learn, I'm really trying to build as much depth around it as I can. I think casual players will be able to get through fights pretty easy, while more core players will be able to map out strategies and defeat demons in the most efficient ways possible.
Thanks for reading!
I'll be doing a post next weekend about.......something....we'll see!
The story of View From Below is focused around the main character; a male high school student called Comet. (Though you're able to name him anything you want.) While at school, Comet is suddenly transported to another world; another dimension called Below. With the help of some mysterious characters, he must journey across Below to the Soul Gate; a portal back to the real world.
The story starts off in this simple, rather straight forward, manner, but quickly spirals out into something much more dark; something much more scary. Though I won't spoil that just yet...
There are big, emotional boss fights, some massive twists, as well as some pretty broken, relatable characters.
I started piecing the story together back in April 2017- back then, it was intended to be used for a visual novel game. After some big changes to the plot, I realized that it was better suited for my favorite genre of game; turn based RPGs.
Next week, I'll be doing another blog post about...something. Unless I forget.
Hi! I just started a development blog for my first indie game "View From Below." Obviously!
I'll be posting screenshots, story details and more at least once a week! Hopefully!
